Applying Local Behavior on Bamboo Utilization in order to Enhancing Bamboo’s Durability and it’s applications as Sustainable Materials

Bamboo, if harvested correctly is a renewable resource and sustainable building material. Properly treated bamboo provides strong, flexible and durable building material able to last over 100 years. It is a suitable replacement for scarce timber resources. There are around 1,250 bamboo species recognized in the world, 140 of which or about 11% are found in Indonesia. Many of these bamboos are excellent for use in construction, furniture and handicrafts, agricultural tools, panpipes, and as groceries.


Bamboo tensile strength to withstand tensile force is different where a slender rod has a resistance of gravity is higher. Allowable tensile stress is 29.4 N/mm2. Powers of the joint press depends on the stems where the stem segment without having to force the compressive strength of 8 -45% higher than the segmented rod. This condition allows bamboo as simple building structure material and able to replace for the imported steel from other country.


But in other side, bamboo isn’t regarded as main development priority. Bamboo is still perceived as easily damaged materials, largely due to its susceptible to insect attack from termites to powder-post beetles. Bamboo is susceptible to attack from termites, powder-post beetle and fungi. Without any preservation, bamboo’s products bamboo will be infested and eaten usually within a few months. Within 1-2 years, untreated bamboo will be destruct the bamboo’s structure and create quality reduction.


The idea is to applying Local Behavior on bamboo’s utilization in order to invent traditional bamboo’s utilization process. This method isn’t only considering the bamboo’s sustainability but also can produce a good bamboo’s durability and enhancing the bamboo’s quality. On bamboo’s application as simple building structure, bamboos are able to replace for scarce timber and imported steel.

Observation method conducted by survey research in order to find up the information about Local Behavior on Bamboo’s utilization process. Pudak Payung, Ungaran Semarang is chosen as observation place. Local Behavior derivations are taken by conducted interview and observation.

Observation results show that applying Local Behavior in handling of bamboo preservation, the bamboo can be used as a simple building structure with high durability and strength. Bamboo can be used as structure because a tensile strength of bamboo is equivalent to mild steel (15,000 psi) and bamboo fiber is about ten times stronger than wood fiber (Garland, 2003).

Bamboo’s traditional treatment has a durable period greater than the bamboo without canning or pickling by chemical methods. Without the sufficient preservation, in the open space bamboo can only be stand 1 – 3 years.  Under the auspices / shielded, bamboo can stand from 4 to 7 years. In ideal conditions, bamboo can be used from 10 to 15 years. But, Local Behavior preservation can create bamboo more durable for more than 15 years ( Indarto, 2010). Bamboo with traditional treatment is not only can improve endurance of bamboo plants but can also maintain bamboo’s sustainability.
